69.7.3 Replace faces

If faces from an imported part do not appear to have been formed correctly, you can replace the faces with a new face generated by Abaqus/CAE based on the underlying geometry. Because Abaqus/CAE relies on the underlying geometry, you should not use the Replace tool if the resulting face would be very convex. If you select more than one face to replace, the faces must be connected.

Alternatively, you can replace a face by extending neighboring faces. This tool is useful for removing bosses or small bumps from your parts.

To replace faces:

  1. From the main menu bar, select ToolsGeometry Edit.

Abaqus/CAE displays the Geometry Edit dialog box.

Tip:  You can also replace faces using the tool, located with the edit tools in the Part module toolbox. For a diagram of the edit tools in the toolbox, see Using the Geometry Edit toolset, Section 69.1.

  2. From the dialog box, select the Face category and the Replace method.

  3. Select the faces that you want to replace. The faces must be connected. You can select the faces from the viewport or click mouse button 3 to paste faces into your selection from a temporary selection group (for details, see What is a selection group?, Section 6.1.2).

You can use a combination of drag select, [Shift] + Click, [Ctrl] + Click, and the angle method to select more than one face to replace. For more information, see Selecting objects within the current viewport, Section 6.2.

Tip:  If you are unable to select the desired faces, you can use the Selection toolbar to change the selection behavior. For more information, see Using the selection options, Section 6.3.

  4. From the prompt area, toggle on Extend neighboring faces to replace the selected faces with a single face that is formed by extending neighboring faces.

  5. Click mouse button 2 to indicate that you have finished selecting faces.

    Abaqus/CAE replaces the selected faces.

  6. If you have finished editing the part, you should check its validity by clicking mouse button 3 on the part in the Model Tree and selecting Update validity from the menu that appears.
